Kindle … Or Is It Just Kindling?
Wired’s Liz Gunnison takes a look at the Kindle and tries to figure out just how successful it can really be. I mentioned the release back in December, shortly after it was introduced. Now, rumors are floating that Amazon has sold 240,000 of the devices for a cool $100M in revenue.
But Liz then starts looking into the numbers and the potential market. People who read, aren’t afraid of technology, have $359 to blow on the device, and aren’t trying to escape technology when they read. It very quickly narrows the potential market.
So, all things considered, how many Kindles does that work out to? Two million? One million? Five hundred thousand?
So, has Amazon already filled half the market for e-readers? Its numbers certainly pale in comparison with the iPhone 3G launch which sold 1 million phones in 3 days.
Will the Kindle thrive? Or will it take a dominant position in a niche market?
