Who’s in the Dog House?
Why, the dog, of course!
A couple weekends ago, I was looking for a project to work on. Something that I could finish up in a short time frame. Given our dog’s tendency to get into trouble lately, I decided that a dog house would be nice project. Besides, it will give her some place to hide from the sun and rain this summer. And it will probably double as a play house for the kids. Not that it’s intended for that.
So, one Saturday afternoon, the family made a trip to Home Depot for a couple 2×4s, a sheet of plywood, and a couple boxes of nails. We transported it all down to my parents house where my dad and I got to work building it. The instructions that we found online are a little odd. And we discovered when we finally started putting everything together that there measurements didn’t quite add up. So, there are a few gaps between the walls, but nothing to serious.
We finished assembling everything that Sunday afternoon, which meant it was time to paint. Or at least prime it anyways. I took care of whitewashing the building with the primer. After dinner, it was the kids turn to get involved. On went the protective clothing, out came the brown paint and brushes, and on went the paint. Neither kid is a professional painter, so there are a few thin spots in the paint. But they had a good time, and now they’ll always be able to point to Bell’s doghouse and say “We helped make that”.
In total, the whole project cost less than $60. Less than any plastic doghouse you might find at PetSmart. And we made it ourselves.
But with that project out of the way, its time to figure out what the next one is going to be. I’ve thought about building a deck, but that takes more money, and I still need to check with the city to see if I need a permit to build it. So, that one may have to wait a bit longer. Any other ideas?

Build a Gazebo. Or if you want something a little smaller, build an actual playhouse for the kids instead of letting them use the doghouse as such.

Well, so far the kids haven’t tried to crawl into it. But then, neither has the dog. I guess Bell is too much of an indoor dog at this point.
