Does God Prefer Wheat or Rice?

Yahoo! News is carrying an AP article about the Catholic Church overturning a young girls communion. An 8-year-old girl, who cannot eat wheat, took the Holy Communion sacrament using a rice cracker instead of a wheat cracker as required by Catholic doctrine. The Church has declared that the rice cracker is not acceptable, and therefore her communion does not count. Does God really care whether you eat a wheat cracker or a rice cracker? Especially if eating the wheat cracker can kill you?

Instance like this are why so many non-Christians have a negative view of Christianity. Men have placed their rules and regulations above people and above God. It is not enough to have faith, you must also follow the rules. Jesus was never one to shy from breaking the rules when they conflicted with God’s commands.

Look at his actions when he found the Temple filled with merchants. He overturned tables and chased the merchants and animals out declaring that they had turned the house of God into “a den thieves.” He ignored the rules of the Jewish leaders about having to have the “right” kind of sacrifice and insisted that God’s law be followed above all.

Remember this the next time you feel the need to correct someone for not worshipping the “right” way. Man looks upon the outside, but God looks upon the heart. What is your heart saying?
