R.I.P. Neon

March 20th, 2004 | jchaager | Cars

I got the phone call this morning from the insurance adjuster. My beautiful Neon has been totaled. The adjuster said the initial repair estimate was $9637. Since the car is only worth $10,090, totaling it was a foregone conclusion. Now, I’m in the market for a replacement vehicle.

And that brings me to the dilemma I find myself in. I really liked my Neon and would love to have another one. But both Karin and I agree that we probably should start looking at getting a mini-van. So, do we take the opportunity and pick up the mini-van? Or do we wait and let me pick up another Neon?

Of course, there is the third alternative. Namely, we trade Karin’s Cruiser in on a mini-van and I buy a used Neon to replace my baby. Not sure how Karin would feel about that though. I’ll have to talk to her about it.

All that is left to do with my, now former, Neon is to collect all my personal belongings out of it. Won’t make it to the body shop today before they close, so it’ll have to be on Monday morning. And I have a lot of junk in the car that I need to get. Guess I better take a big box.

It is sad when a relatively small accident causes enough damage to “total” the vehicle. I say small as you were not doing cartwheels down a hill ;) Replacement parts should not be that expensive, it is not like the engine was destroyed. Just bugs me that the body panels are as expensive as they are … it is ‘just’ a shell after all. Though it begs the question … was the frame bent? A bent frame pretty much dictates “new car”.
