Digital Photo Prints…

January 26th, 2004 | jchaager | photography

A word of advise to any of you digital photographers that might be looking to have some of your digital masterpieces printed. Make sure that you crop them down to their intended size before you take them to be printed. In other words, if you want a photo to be printed as a 5×7, crop down to a 5×7 aspect ratio first, then take it in to be printed.

We took a bunch of pictures in this weekend to have them printed. Unfortunately, I had cropped them down so that they looked good, not so that they fit on a 5×7 or 8×10 sheet. So, when CostCo printed them for us, they simply cropped them down themselves to make them fit. This ended up cropping the sides and bottom off some of the pictures.

Needless to say, I heard about this oversight on my part. So take my advise, and deal with the cropping before hand. And for best results, do separate crops for 5×7 and 8×10. They are different aspect ratios after all.

Thanks for the info. I was just about to take a couple CDs in to be printed - however, based on your comments I have now gone back and properly cropped each of the photos.

Thank goodness for iPhoto’s “constraint” cropping tool!
