Exercices dans l’absurdit
Ah, the French. It seems they’ve never gotten over losing their world dominance. If they aren’t complaining about the US’s foreign policy, then they’re busy trying to expunge all English words from the French vocabulary. CNET News is reporting on the latest absurdity they are trying to foist on their people.
It seems the French can no longer send e-mail to each other. Now, they must send courriel. Get over yourselves guys. Do you really think your decrees are going to change anything?

i have no problem with a country trying to protect its heritage, language, and culture. as canadian i see parts of my country’s culture eroded by the US all the time, especially in the areas of television and radio.
but i think this situation is a lot like trademark law. from (http://www.chillingeffects.org/trademark/faq.cgi#QID418 ): “if a trademark owner fails to police his or her mark, the owner may be deemed to have abandoned the mark or acquiesced in its misuse. A trademark is only protected while it serves to identify the source of goods or services.”
so if you fail to object within a reasonable amount of time, you set a precident and lose your right to complain.
perhaps they could have made a case to their citizens in the late 80s. but i think it’s kind of late in the /jeu/ to be trying to change things now.
